The Grand Duke (Le Grand Duc)
Written by Yann. Art by Romain Hugault.
Two pilots on opposing sides of the Eastern Front cross paths in the air.
Overview
The 2008 first album follows Wülf, a Luftwaffe night fighter troubled by Nazi brutality, and Lilya, a Soviet pilot among the Night Witches. Their encounters turn aerial combat into a story of individual choices within a destructive war.
Why It Matters
The book gives its pilots different loyalties without flattening the politics of the conflict. Aircraft are instruments of war, but each cockpit contains a person under pressure.
